How do I take an ignition module off of a 1986 mercury sable?

I have been trying to figure out how to remove my ignition module and the farthest I have been able to get is taking the distributor cap off of the car. The rest is just not happening I can’t figure out the next steps. The two bolts that are attaching the module to the distributor don’t match up to anything that I have in my tool box. Any help is appreciated.

It is a star socket. Kind of a reverse TORX bit. It is small I think a 3 or 4 millimeter. Most auto parts stores have the special tool for five bucks or so.

TIP: Try and replace without removing or rotating the distributor. That is possible most of the time. If you have to rotate it be sure to make a good reference mark so you can put it back exactly as it was.

  1. well call the dealer or parts store and get what size the head is then rent, barrow or buy the socket.
